Gun Milan: frequently asked questions

What is Gun Milan?

Gun Milan (Ashtakoot) is the traditional way of matching a groom and bride: eight kootas worked out from their birth nakshatra and rashi add up to 36 points.

How many points are enough?

Traditionally 18 or more is considered acceptable, 25 to 32 good and above 33 excellent. But Gun Milan is only one factor; other things matter just as much.

What is Nadi dosha?

When the groom and bride have the same nadi, Nadi koota scores 0; this is called Nadi dosha. Some exceptions are recognised, so ask an astrologer.

Does Mangal dosha mean no marriage?

No. Mangal dosha is a traditional factor. If both partners have it, it is considered balanced, and some exceptions are also described.

What if the birth time is not known?

Gun Milan rests on the Moon's rashi and nakshatra. If the Moon is in the same nakshatra all day the points do not change, but an accurate time gives a more reliable result.
